Veilig rijden

When should you switch off your high beam?

High beam may not be used when it would dazzle other road users.

Wanneer moet je grootlicht uitschakelen? – Rijmaatje

What does this rule or driving tip mean? High beam increases your visibility on dark roads, but it can temporarily dazzle other road users. So switch back to low beam early.

How to apply this safely
Look for light beams coming from behind bends and hills.
Also dip your lights for cyclists, pedestrians, and boaters along the road.
If you are dazzled, look toward the right edge of your lane.

Driving lesson and exam tip
Use high beam actively but consciously. Never using it out of fear of forgetting to dip the lights is not good lighting use either.
Remember: dip your high beam in time for oncoming traffic and when you are driving behind someone.
