What does this rule or driving tip mean?Stopping on the hard shoulder is dangerous because of the high speed and small margin for error. Use it only in an emergency or when signage explicitly allows it.

How to apply this safely
Turn on your hazard lights and pull the car as far to the right as possible.
Exit the car on the safe side.
Wait behind the crash barrier and call for help.

Driving lesson and exam tip
Check warning lights and how the vehicle is behaving. If it is safe to continue to a secure parking area, that is often safer.

Remember: only use the hard shoulder in an emergency; if possible, leave the car on the passenger side and move behind the crash barrier.
