The five-metre parking rule
According to the traffic rules, you may not park within five metres of an intersection. This rule helps keep sightlines clear and gives drivers room to turn safely.
Why is that distance important?
Drivers can see traffic from the left and right earlier.
Pedestrians are not hidden behind a parked car.
Large vehicles have enough room to take the turn.
Emergency services and other traffic can pass more easily.
Do not underestimate five metres. If in doubt, choosing a spot further from the corner is the safe option. Also check for other parking restrictions, such as a yellow line, bus stop, driveway or traffic sign.
Exam tip
If you are asked to park independently, take your time to first check the surroundings and the applicable rules. A technically neat parking manoeuvre in a prohibited place is still the wrong choice.
