What does this rule or driving tip mean? The Dutch traffic regulations (RVV) allow cyclists to ride two abreast. However, this is not an unlimited right: if they cause an obstruction or create an unsafe situation, they must ride single file.
How to apply this safely
Expect the available space to change quickly when cycling in groups.
Only overtake if you can keep a sufficient lateral distance.
If oncoming traffic is approaching, it is better to wait than to pass a cyclist too closely.
Driving lesson and test tip
During your driving lesson, show that you spot cyclists in time and adjust your speed before deciding to overtake.
Remember: Two cyclists riding side by side is allowed, as long as they do not hinder other traffic.
